By creating a Masquerade account, you agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

These terms form a contract between you and Masquerade, operated by Webaze BV, Kortrijk, Belgium. “Service” means masquerade.broker, the browser extension, and the email relay.

You must be at least 16 years old to use Masquerade (18 in some jurisdictions). By registering, you confirm you meet the minimum age requirement in your country.

Masquerade lets you create persona profiles (fictitious but internally consistent identities) and generate alias email addresses attached to those personas. When someone sends email to an alias, it is relayed (encrypted) to your Masquerade inbox.

The intended use is to protect your real identity when signing up to websites, mailing lists, services, or anywhere you prefer not to disclose your actual name and email. Think of it as a professional version of giving a fake name to a coffee shop.

Masquerade is not an anonymity tool for circumventing legal obligations. It is a privacy tool for reducing data exposure in the normal course of everyday online activity.

You may use Masquerade to:

• Sign up for websites, newsletters, and services using an alias identity.
• Protect your real email address from spam and data brokers.
• Keep different areas of your life (work, personal, shopping) separated by persona.
• Test websites or services without exposing your primary identity.
• Protect your privacy as a journalist, activist, researcher, or anyone with a legitimate reason not to use their real name.

These uses are the whole point of the service. We support them fully.

You may not use Masquerade for:

• Fraud or impersonation: deceiving someone in a way that causes them harm, financial loss, or that violates their rights.
• Harassment or abuse: contacting someone in a way designed to intimidate, threaten, or harass them.
• Spam: sending unsolicited bulk email from Masquerade aliases.
• Illegal activity: using aliases to commit or facilitate crimes under Belgian law or the laws of the jurisdiction in which you operate.
• Terms evasion: creating multiple accounts to circumvent service limits or bans.
• Automated abuse: scripted or automated creation of large numbers of aliases for purposes other than legitimate personal use.
• CSAM or illegal content: any use involving content illegal under applicable law.
• Circumventing legal identity requirements: such as KYC requirements in regulated industries where real identity verification is legally mandated.

You acknowledge that you are solely responsible for how you use Masquerade-generated personas and aliases. Masquerade is a privacy tool. It is not a tool for deception, fraud, or causing harm to others. Any legal consequences arising from your misuse of the service are your responsibility alone.

Breach of these terms may result in immediate account termination and, where legally required, disclosure to law enforcement.

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your master password. If you lose it, we cannot recover your encrypted data; there is no password reset that bypasses encryption. See our Privacy Policy for details on how encryption works.

You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. If you suspect unauthorised access, contact security@email.masquerade.broker immediately.

You may not share your account credentials or allow others to use your account. Family and Business plans provide legitimate mechanisms for shared access.

Masquerade offers a free tier and paid plans. Plan details, including alias limits, message retention, and feature access, are shown on our pricing page and may change with reasonable notice.

Paid plans are billed in advance on a monthly or annual cycle. Billing is handled by Mollie. You authorise Mollie to charge the payment method you provide.

Refunds. We offer a pro-rated refund if you cancel within 14 days of a new annual subscription. After that, no refunds are issued for the remaining period. Monthly plans can be cancelled at any time; you retain access until the end of the billing period.

We will give at least 30 days notice before increasing prices. Existing annual subscribers are not subject to price increases until their plan renews.

We aim to provide a reliable service but we are a one-person company and cannot guarantee 100% uptime. We do not offer a formal SLA on any paid plan at this time.

Planned maintenance will be announced with at least 24 hours notice on our status page. Emergency maintenance may occur without notice.

Email relay delivery depends on third-party infrastructure and DNS. We are not responsible for delays caused by recipient mail servers or spam filters outside our control.

You retain ownership of everything you put into Masquerade: your personas, your messages, your data. We do not claim any licence to your content beyond what is necessary to operate the service (storing and routing your encrypted data).

Because persona data is end-to-end encrypted, we cannot and do not review it. By using the service, you confirm that your content does not violate these terms or applicable law.

You can export all your data as JSON at any time from your account settings. When you delete your account, your encrypted data is permanently deleted from our servers within 30 days.

By you: You can close your account at any time from your account settings. This permanently deletes your data. We do not retain it.

By us: We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these terms, particularly the prohibited use section. For non-emergency breaches, we will attempt to contact you first. For severe breaches (fraud, illegal activity, spam), we may act immediately.

If we terminate your account without cause (for example, we shut down the service), we will provide at least 60 days notice and a pro-rated refund for any unused paid period. We will also provide a data export window during that notice period.

Masquerade is provided “as is”. To the maximum extent permitted by Belgian law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or €100, whichever is greater.

We are not liable for: loss of data caused by loss of your master password (by design, E2EE means we cannot recover it); delays or failures in email delivery caused by third-party mail servers; or indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under Belgian law.

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Masquerade, Webaze BV, and its directors, employees, and service providers from and against any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to:

• Your use or misuse of the service.
• Your breach of these Terms of Service.
• Any fraud, impersonation, identity abuse, or other activity that violates Section 4 (Prohibited use).
• Any third-party claim that arises because of actions you took using Masquerade personas or aliases.

If Masquerade becomes subject to a claim covered by this section, we will notify you promptly in writing and cooperate reasonably in your defence. You may not settle any such claim in a way that imposes obligations on Masquerade without our prior written consent.

This indemnification obligation reflects a fundamental principle of the service: Masquerade provides the privacy infrastructure; you are responsible for how you use it.

These terms are governed by Belgian law. Any dispute that cannot be resolved by negotiation will be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Kortrijk, Belgium.

If you are a consumer in the EU, you may also use the European Commission’s Online Dispute Resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.

We may update these terms from time to time. If the changes are material, we will notify you by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the service after that date constitutes acceptance of the new terms.

If you disagree with a change, you may terminate your account before the change takes effect and receive a pro-rated refund for any unused paid period.
